BROWN SWISS NEWSROOM ARCHIVE

2007 All-Americans (02/08)

The 2007 All American nominations were released recently, completing the 2007 show season. New Generation Genetics was extremely well represented with an astounding 29 female nominations out of a possible 90. Not only is this 32% of the nominations coming from one sire stud, but it’s also 8 MORE than the next 2 studs combined! Quite an accomplishment considering there are many organizations focusing on “show type”. This is just another example that the philosophy of breeding the “Complete Cow” actually results in type that you can show and cows that will milk.

The sires of the nominations include: Starbuck, Seattle, Premium, Flashback, Vance, Legacy, Denver, Jolt, Big Time, Bonanza, Solution, Deluxe, and Link. This group of sires is a great representation of the Past, Present, and Future of New Generation Genetics.

January Proof Run (01/08)

New Number 1 Net Merit !

54BS374
VIGOR has cracked Beamer's hold on the number 1 Net Merit position...this is despite Beamer increasing $33! Vigor's proof is remarkably balanced, ranking well in nearly every major category. Consider for Active Bulls, Vigor ranks in the Top 10 for Protein, Udder Composite, Somatic Cell, Productive Life and Daughter Pregnancy Rate!

54BS317
TD scored again, improving across the board, and jumps into the Top 10 Net Merit list for the first time! He is also #2 for Type and #3 for DPR and Udder Composite.

54BS330
DENVER more than doubled daughters going over 1100, and maintained his production and type credits, while improving for Udder Composite. Watch for numerous daughters in the show rings,,,and bull mother lists.

206BS10 BEAMER As stated earlier, Beamer released his grip on #1, but he didn't go quietly... In fact, he improved across the board for production, SCS and DPR. He is now the #1 DPR bull with and impressive +1.8, or a half point improvement. He remains the elite bull of the breed for instant fat and protein.

As reported in August, Sire Summaries will now be calculated 3 times per year. Release dates are roughly the 2nd Tuesday in January, the first Tuesday in April, and the 3rd Tuesday in August.

With one less summary, we plan to issue our catalog in January and August, and our popular newsletter in April. We will strive to up-date www.BrownSwiss.com on a regular basis, and send email up-dates on new bulls available.

To be sure to be included in the most recent Brown Swiss news, including new proofs, new young bulls, recent sales and shows, simply send us an email or note to be included on our regular updates and visit BrownSwiss.com regularly. Also, if you have Brown Swiss news, we would love to hear it!

August Proof Run (08/07)

All Around Improvement!

After last runs massive changes, this run was much more stable. New Generation bulls improved nearly across the entire line-up, and for most every category. Remember, this will be the last evaluation until January 2008!!

54BS374 Sun-Made VIGOR *TM had a dream run, improving for nearly every trait, and strengthening his grip on the #1 Net Merit ranking. Vigor is the rare combination of extremely good udders, feet and legs, strength AND production. His improvement in protein lands him in the top 10 Active bulls for pounds protein, SCS, Productive Life, Foot and Leg Composite and he is #7 for Udder Composite! Now that is a nice balance.

54BS330 Rolling View DENVER *TM added over 120 daughters and 100 pounds of milk to his proof, and maintained his elite type status while doubling his classified daughters. He also added near a quarter point to his Udder Composite.

54BS317 Webster Ridge TD *TM now enjoys his highest milk, fat and protein evaluation EVER after adding 50% more daughters! And, as expected, his Udder Composite climbed back into the elite of the breed level.

54BS316 Hilltop Acres T JOLT *TM added another 400 daughters and rebounded 5 pounds of protein. We look forward to these daughters maturing and continuing to add to his proof.

54BS339 Blessing Mort Laura LEGACY regained in type, confirming his ability to make the big time kind.

54BS Bo-Joy Vance GETSUM *TM enters the line-up after confirming his ability to make powerful cows that know how to milk. At +844 he is one of the higher new release milk bulls...and from the emerging G family at Bo-Joy.

54BS329 Arthurst GarBro DIABLO *TM continues his assent of both the sire rankings and popularity index. Clearly the next 'why didn't he get used more?' bull. Remember, he is limited inventory.

New USDA Multi-Breed Base Change (05/07)

Massive Change...The only constant is change. This famous saying understates the new Multi Breed Base implemented by USDA. For the first time, cows of different breeds are compared against one another. For mixed herds, this means Brown Swiss may have Holstein or any other breed as herdmates. Additionally, crossbred cows can be included routinely in the evaluation of their sire. The new system attempts to correct for hetorosis, and genetic differences between breeds.

We are supportive of these efforts, as they will allow for more information, and more reliability in all sire evaluations. However, with any change, especially one this massive, there can be a few bumps along the way. An unexpected consequence of the change is an overall drop, resembling a base change, except not all bulls changed by the same amounts. The average drop was approximately -278 milk, -11.8 fat -9.3 protein, -0.6 productive life and -0.2 DPR. SCS showed no change.

There is still need to review some of the process, and perhaps better account for daughters in mixed herds, and their interaction with herdmates. We and others in the industry will be asking USDA-AIPL to continue to refine their use of this new, import system. However, for the long term, this can be a very positive change for the future.

May Proof Run (05/07)

54BS374 VIGOR ET *TM (President D X Even Victoria) has emerged as the breed's most complete bull. With strong positive numbers in all important categories, plus his unique pedigree, make him an easy bull to use on a broad range of cows. One of the top bulls in Switzerland for both udders and feet and legs, he also excels for SCS and protein.

54BS329 DIABLO (Balance X PR Dream) more than held his own to advance up the list. Despite his limited early use, his second crop daughters are eye pleasing, and his first crop daughters have matured nicely. Unfortunately, semen is limited on this under appreciated bull.

54BS330 DENVER *TM (Prelude X Jetway Dallas) nearly doubled his daughter count, and changed in line with all other bulls. His silky dairy daughters have been impressive, and we look forward to their maturation. Preferred Sex semen is currently available!

54BS317 TD *TM (Tom X Ensign Dally) improved his production information, relative to the rest of the breed, while maintaining his elite udder composite. This unique pedigreed, high productive life bull certainly has his place in most breeding programs.

54BS339 LEGACY (Collection X Tradition Laura) maintained both his relative production information, and outstanding type. His daughters have been appreciated in the spring sales, siring the 2nd high selling cow AND top heifer (tie) at the recent Future Premiums sale.

Good Starts:

54BS380 PATRIOT (Seattle X Pat Patty) made a very solid initial showing, claiming the top spot for Net Merit of bulls with new proofs. With his unique pedigree, and balance production proof, we look forward to August when we will give a more complete look into his type pattern.

54BS383 GETSUM (Vance X Ensign Goldie) emerged with +886 milk and +29 protein, far exceeding his Parent Averages. Like Patriot, we await August for initial type information.

Net Merit Leader (2/12/07)

54BS374 Sun-Made VIGOR ET *TM (President X Even Victoria) backed up his initial run by jumping to the top of the Net Merit list, ranking 2nd overall. Of Active bulls he is also in the Top 5 for Udder Composite, Somatic Cell and Productive Life. VIGOR is perhaps the most balanced bull in recent memory.

206BS10 Emic Gord BEAMER *TW retains his #1 Net Merit ranking, due to his strong DPR score (fertility), low SCS and of course, mega high fat and protein numbers.

54BS330 Rolling View DENVER *TM has begun to add second crop daughters with solid results, especially for components and type where he gained to +.9.

54BS316 Quincy Even SPECIAL *TW increased yet again for Net Merit, Productive Life, Udder Composite and DPR, making him one of the elite all-around 2nd Crop bulls.

54BS316 Hilltop Acres T JOLT *TM more than doubled his daughter count yet again, causing great volatility. As with the earlier daughters, we look forward to their development into strong production cows.

54BS317 Webster Ridge TD *TM maintained his strong Net Merit ranking, while adding more 2nd Crop daughters. We look forward to their arrival.

54BS339 Blessing Mort Laura LEGACY also strengthened to +523 milk and +.6 for final score. Looking forward to his summer showing!

Preferred Sex Semen (11/06)

Sex specific semen is the Holy Grail of the A.I. business. XY, Inc. patented an effective, though slow process many years ago. Recently, several parties have jumped into the ‘Gender Enhanced’ business using this sorting procedure.

Imagine, instead of a young sire, or a bull you are not sure fits your breeding program, you can select high type, high performance, and highly proven bulls with confidence and with Preferred Sex.

Through an agreement with Trans Ova Genetics, an industry leader in reproductive technologies, New Generation can now offer some of your favorite bulls as Preferred Sex. Now, you can have more heifers from the bulls you are already using. With New Generation you can now use
proven bulls such as DENVER and return 90% heifers!

Like all sexed semen produced with this technology, we suggest use on healthy virgin heifers to maximize your returns. While not all bulls are able to be ‘sorted’, we will be making additional bulls available as soon as possible. By calling ahead, you can reserve the first semen available on your favorite bull. We will also up-date our web site as new bulls become available.

NOW AVAILABLE.... PREFERRED SEX SEMEN FROM DENVER, LEGACY, and VIGOR!

Contact us today to pre-order your Preferred Sex semen!

November Proof Run (11/06)

54BS374 VIGOR- debuts in the Top 10 U.S. Net Merit list! We are extremely excited about what we see from this unique President son of E-93 Even Victoria. His milking daughters in Switzerland look great! With a pedigree stack of the 2 best Productive Life bulls, he is a rising star for longevity, SCS and Udder Composite. He also provides solid production and reasonable components. Watch for many additional daughters in February!

54BS316 JOLT- despite his slight slip, Jolt remains tied for #1 Active Type bull with second crop daughters! Unfortunately, as bulls get more daughters they move to the middle. There are only 6 second crop bulls higher than Jolt for type! JOLT is resisting those trends better than most. With 70% more daughters, most early first lactation, volatility is expected. He made significant improvements for both SCS and Productive Life. Watch for lots more daughters in the coming couple runs & and his emergence as the most complete of the second crop bulls.

206BS10 BEAMER- Undisputed Net Merit leader! If Net Merit is the value that a cow creates for her owner, then BEAMER is creating an incredible amount of value for dairymen milking his daughters. His production levels are tough to beat: massive protein and fat, high DPR and SCS all with nearly 600 pounds of milk.

54BS330 DENVER- Looks as sexy as ever! YES we have sexed DENVER semen, which makes him one of few proven bulls and by far the highest type bull that has been offered. No more settling for a young sire, or bull you are not certain you want to use. His early second crop are calving, and reports are good.

54BS317 TD- TD continues his quiet march up the production list, while maintaining his breed leading Productive Life and Type scores. He now ranks 18th for Net Merit! He also received his first milking speed score coming in at just above breed average at 101.

Stable Second Crop Results

54BS316
JOLT has increased 40% in daughters, and has maintained his elite production and type status, ranking in the top 10 for Milk, Protein, and Type! He also improved for SCS by 3 quarters of a Standard Deviation.

54BS316 SPECIAL continues to meet the needs of today's markets. He is solid for milk, fat, protein, SCS and working his way to the top of the Productive Life list. He is also the breed's leading bull for milking speed.

54BS282 PREMIUM is the most overlooked bull in many years. 6 years after his initial proof, he is near his all-time high for milk, protein and type, and is higher than ever for Productive Life, Somatic Cell and DPR! While his semen is gone, will offer 2 high
profile sons late this year...better late than never!

54BS284 SEATTLE daughters are definitely built to last...as shown by his +5.1 Productive Life! Dairymen love his consistent pattern of high quality udders and blend of strength and dairyness.

The Newer Generation stable also...

206BS10
BEAMER continues his reign at the top of the Protein, Fat, PTI and Net Merit lists. He added 2 pounds of protein to his already breed leading total. Further, his DPR moved up, tieing for 5th among Active Bulls!

54BS317 TD is emerging as a Fitness Trait King! He now ranks #1 for Productive Life, DPR, Calving Ease and #2 Udder Composite! We look forward to the influx of his second crop daughters.

54BS330 DENVER confirms his balance with solid milk, high components and silky, high quality udders. He is also tied for 2nd Type bull in the breed.

54BS329 DIABLO 's proof is consistent like his daughters. Overlooked early, dairymen now like his complete type pattern, breed leading SCS and good milk production. Watch for much more in the future.

54BS348 BRAVO is a new addition. A Denmark from Pete Rose Blossom, he sires good milk with positive protein.

Changes for August Run (08/06)

Please note, the formula for Net Merit and Productive Life changed for this run. Productive Life now considers production after 84 months of age AND after 305 days in milk. Net Merit has had a shift in weights, and a change in product values. Essentially, fat was increased, protein decreased and more emphasis placed on Productive Life and Daughter Pregnancy Rate. Full details are available at:  http://aipl.arsusda.gov/reference/nmcalc.htm

Because of these changes, it is impossible to compare raw Net Merit or Productive Life numbers from this run to previous runs.

MAY PROOF INFO NOW POSTED (05/06)

54BS316 JOLT added 31 daughters and maintained very high levels of production and exceptional type. Most pleasing is his solid improvement in productive life & which means that they last. Keep your eyes open this summer as his second crop daughters continue to emerge around the world.

54BS330 DENVER remains strong with the second highest type score for the breed at +0.9 PTAT. DENVER is the bull to use when your breeding program demands high, wide rear udders, superior components, and the open, dairy frames that make milk.

206BS10 BEAMER remains the #1 U.S. proven bull for Net Merit $, Protein and PTI and is a major profit producer. How can you go wrong with +.15% fat, +.18% protein and 2.79 somatic cell score? The only wrong decision would be not to use him at all!

54BS339 LEGACY has been creating quite a buzz at the spring shows and sales. They are the tall, straightlined, fancy calves that everyone enjoys showing. Most importantly they develop into big, strong cows with the high, wide rear udders that everyone likes to milk. Act now to be a part of the LEGACY that he is developing.

54BS317 TD just scored again by nearly doubling his previous PTA for milk. What's more attractive is that he did it while maintaining his sky high type score of +0.9 with a 1.55 Udder Composite. Udder quality, productive life (+3.0), and calving ease (3%) have made TD a #1 pick for many dairy producers.

54BS311 SPECIAL is Mr. Reliable. Few bulls transmit their genetics as consistently as this sire, and thats exactly what makes him so SPECIAL. A great improver for milking speed, components, foot structure and mobility, and overall cow functionality, SPECIAL daughters are the ones that nobody has to worry about and are around the herd for many years.

54BS350 POLICY's remarkable milk proof is holding true and his type numbers are finally starting to show what he actually transmits. Look for much better things out of this young bull in the near future.

207BS 6 ETVEI is a German bull that combines high production, solid components, low Somatic Cell with powerful frames, well attached udders and a unique pedigree. ETVEI contains no Simon blood, meaning he can easily be used on Jetway, Ensign and other common U.S. pedigrees. His sire, Emstar is the U.S. bred Emory son has been a leading bull for type and production in Europe for over 10 years. His dam is from one of Germany's best type and udder sires.

February Proof Run... (2/06)
206BS10 BEAMER shines brightly at the top of every important list: PTI, Net Merit, Protein, Protein % +.17, and Fat % +.13. Combined with a very solid udder composite, and ample strength and substance, Beamer is the right bull at the right time!

54BS316 JOLT added a few second crop daughters, and improved for milk, fat, protein AND productive life. He also improved in type, ranking him in the top 5 for final score. He remains the breeds dominant strength bull, and one of the most outcross pedigrees available.

54BS330 DENVER improved across the board for production. He confirms his balance of milk, fat and protein production, along with elite type and udder quality.

54BS350 POLICY premiers with impressive production and protein information the Polly family is famous for. Watch for more type information on what may be the families most complete son to date.

54BS311 SPECIAL adds another 40+ daughters but maintains his all-around status for production, components, udders and longevity. That spells customer satisfaction!

54BS329 DIABLO is the bull we predict in a few years will have people asking "why wasn't this bull used more?". He combines one of the most impressive bar charts in the industry with solid production and breed leading SCS.

54BS339 LEGACY maintains his status as the elite type and style bull, that does not sacrifice production. Watch for his daughters this summer, and early sons this fall.

54BS311 SPECIALregains his much of his ranking after adding many daughters the last two runs. Improving across the board, he proves once again why we believe he is so special!

54BS330 DENVER is consistently siring impressive open ribbed cattle with beautiful, high quality udders. He also improves components and milking speed. These are some of the reasons his demand remains a mile high.

  August Sire Summary Highlights (08/05)

Leaders in Outcross, Strength and Production

54BS316 JOLT confirms again his impressive combination of production, type, protein % and unique pedigree, ranking in the Top 10 active bulls for milk, protein, fat, type and Expected Future Inbreeding (outcross).

206BS10 BEAMER has exploded on the seen as the elite bull for components, udders and strength. He solidifies his #1 Net Merit and PTI ranking, with exceptional Somatic Cell Score and Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR). BEAMER delivers what many believe the breed needs...in one strong package.

54BS345 DIGGER remains Zoldo's top bull for production and protein. He also sires the dairy strength to maintain high level production lactation after lactation.

54BS332 PHD ranks #3 for protein among active bulls. High milk production, with high protein %, all from cows with booming rear udders. This PHD is all business!

Leaders in Type and Udders with Solid Production

54BS330 DENVER has been ascending the type, udder and production lists each of the last 3 runs. Denver makes impressive dairy cows, with silky, high quality udders, and fast milking speed.

54BS294 PREMIUM is perhaps the most talked about second crop bull today. Tall, long and stylish, with super udders. His only draw back is lack of semen supply....this is likely his last offering!

54BS311 SPECIAL remains one of our most popular bulls. His daughters udder quality, perfect foot structure, components and milking speed make him easy to use to produce the care-free, no problem cow in demand today.

New Generation Sired Heifers Do Well at 2005 National Brown Swiss Convention(07/05)

With a great turnout of 111 heifers shown at the 1st National Brown Swiss Convention Heifer Show on July 1, New Generation Genetics was well represented. There were 33 NGG sired heifers present at the show, and of those, 13 placed in the top 7.

JOLT had a great day as there were 15 Jolt heifers shown and of those, 6 placed in the top 7, including a class winner. In the Spring Calf class, JOLT sired the 1st, 3rd, & 4th place heifers!

Other NGG results were; 2nd Fall Calf sired by DENVER, 3rd Winter Yearling sired by JOLT, and 2nd Fall Yearling sired by VANCE. New Generation Genetics proved dominate by having sired 30% of the animals at the show, more than any other stud.

May 2005 Sire Summary Highlights (05/05)

206BS10 BEAMER strengthens his grip on #1 PTI and #1 Net Merit. Above all else, his components shine bright at + .11% fat, + .13% protein! When is the last time we had a bull with this and substantial milk. With all daughters in the U.S.A., we are working with the Brown Swiss Association to get them scored for August....

54BS316 JOLT maintains his elite status as the go to production and type bull. Rave reviews by the owners of the oldest and youngest Jolts make him our most popular bull in history!

54BS345 DIGGER is a breed leader for fat and protein improvement. As the #1 Zoldo son, his daughters have the strength to go with the production...we call it breed character.

54BS330 DENVER results shows he balances solid production, components, open rib and super udders, making him one of the most desirable all around bulls available.

54BS294 PREMIUM daughters have always been impressive in the field. Now, his proof shows he is one of the elite 2nd crop, all-around bulls in the breed.

54BS311 SPECIAL is still one of our favorite bulls. Why? Because they are favorites of our customers milking them! Like his sire, we fully expect his proof to improve as his daughters mature.

Beginning with the February 2005 Sire Summary, the PTI Formula has been expanded. Also affected are the Production & Type Trait Scores due to the Genetic Base Changes. Revisions in these calculations may cause certain bulls to change more than others. Click HERE to read more information regarding these updates. (02/05)

Comparing this bull proof run to the last run is like comparing "apples to oranges". The 5 year base change on average lowered all bulls -479 lbs. milk, -19 lbs. fat, -16 lbs. protein and -.37 type. In the end, what is important is the overall rankings of the bulls, not an absolute number.

  February 2005 Sire Summary

What a run!  1-2-3 PTI, 1-2-3 Type, 1-2-4-5 Protein ! (02/05)

206BS10 BEAMER (Emico X Gordon) who is sampled in the U.S.A., in cooperation with A.N.A.R.B. and Ciz of Italy, has emerged as the highest ranking international bull used to date in the U.S.! These powerful cows have snug udders, deep rib and PROTEIN! He is tied for #1 Protein, and holds the #1 Net Merit and #1 PTI titles by himself!

54BS316 JOLT (Tom X Blend) solidified his role as the complete bull, delivering high milk, protein and a type pattern not usually found with elite production bulls. He is a leading bull in the breed for strength, type and yes, out-cross (EFI).

54BS345 DIGGER (Zoldo X Credit) adds early daughters in Switzerland, and maintains his leading role as a fat and protein power-house! We are eager to see his progress as more daughters enter his proof.

54BS332 PHD (Gordon X Collection) pushes his way back up the list, again tying for the #1 Protein bull of the breed! Whether pounds or percent protein, he delivers.

Second Crop Success !

54BS311 SPECIAL (Even X Babaray) is the leading 2nd crop sire for both PTI and Net Merit! The more there are, the older they get, the more SPECIAL they become. Now #5 Productive Life, #5 Net Merit and yes, they have proven to be especially fast milking!

54BS284 SEATTLE (Prophet X Simon) has now moved to #3 Productive Life, and continues to improve, just like his daughters, his Udder Composite and his production proof. Customer satisfaction...you bet!

54BS285 PRESIDENT (Ensign X Dotson) daughters have stood the test of time...and he is now #1 Productive Life bull of the breed!

Starting To See a Trend? So Are Our Customers...Cows Built to Last!

We shouldn't end without mentioning old-timer 54BS256 EMERALD. After 9 years, he still ranks high on important lists like protein, fat, milk...and customer satisfaction! 11,700 daughters can't be wrong. The most complete Emory son...we believe so.

*All Rankings NAAB Active List Feb. 05

  November 2004 Sire Summary

#1 PTI, #1 UDDER COMPOSITE, #1 TYPE....ALL FROM 1 PROGRAM!  (11/04)

54BS345 DIGGER... sets an incredible pace on his first daughters! Easily the top bull in the breed for fat and protein, Digger daughters are impressing their owners with exceptional udder quality. We are obviously excited as he adds many daughters in the coming runs.

54BS316 JOLT.. maintains his breed leading type at +1.4, and over a point for Udder Composite. His added reliability confirms his superiority in combing high production, especially protein, strong type and shallow udders.

54BS317 TD... repeats as the breed's premier udder specialist with the top Udder Composite of +1.93! He also brings an outcross pedigree, high type score, and strong Productive Life score.

Speaking of Productive Life!....4 of the top 5 from NGG!

54BS311 SPECIAL... he continues his march up the Productive Life and Net Merit Lists, now cracking the Top 5 in both for the first time! He has also improved to +.08 % fat and +.05% protein, and has a Milking Speed evaluation in Switzerland...which confirms how Special he is!

54BS284 SEATTLE... shows why he is a breeder favorite, improving to #4 Productive Life and Somatic Cell Score. Silky, fast milking udders are always favored!

54BS285 PRESIDENT and 76BS900 EVEN are battling for the top Productive Life scores in the breed...as we always thought they would!

New Generation has the heaviest use in the industry of these 4 bulls...if longevity matters, consider the source!

CONFIRMING THEIR PLACES....

54BS339 LEGACY... impressive show type, he improves udder composite, milk and fat. If you want to compete at the top end, but not pay for it in the bulk tank....Legacy is in your future.

54BS332 PHD... improves his already elite protein numbers. As perhaps Polly's best all-around son to date, PHD offers a unique pedigree, and a heavy dose of protein!

54BS330 DENVER... maintains his rank as a strong production bull, with outstanding udders..ranks as the #1 Udder Composite Prelude son.

August 2004 Sire Summary (08/04)

54BS316 JOLT continues to be the breed's dominant bull for production, type, strength and outcross. What other bull combines so much, in such a unique package?

54BS330 DENVER
confirmed his ability to sire high production and fabulous udders...improving across the board.

54BS311 SPECIAL
is living up to his name! With many new 2nd crop daughters, Special has confirmed his role as a production, udder and longevity SPECIALIST. He has now cracked the Top 5 for Productive Life...and still climbing.

54BS329 DIABLO
continues to improve...with one of the most impressive linear charts in the business! Like Even before him, Diablo could be the most over-looked bull today!

54BS339 LEGACY
is emerging as the bull that can make the fancy one, without sacrificing production. Why settle for less?

54BS345 DIGGER......
stay tuned! While an early sampling...his daughters milk, test and look good doing it. Look for more in November.

Special Note...our current offerings are from 37 cow families world-wide! Our 12 proven bulls are from 11 different cow families, and 9 different sires....now that is something 'Progressive'...

NGG Presents a Special Offering on this Young Sire!  (05/04)

76BS909 Brook-Run Ensign FAME-ET has the All-American Eye Appeal. Click on his name for more information!

Type Proof Change (05/04)

You will notice 2 significant changes in this run's type information:

1) Bulls lost reliability, and moved closer together. Why? Someone with too much time on their hands...maybe. USDA determined heritability was too high & and lowered it. While I am no geneticist, this results in less emphasis on daughter information, and more on the pedigree. This causes the extreme bulls to move to the middle, and all to lose some reliability. USDA is being asked to take a second look at this unpopular decision.

2) Udder Composite is now being divided by 10, making it look closer to Final Score and linears.  No change will occur in ranking, it only means +20.0 UC is now +2.0.

May 2004 Sire Summary (05/04)

54BS316 Hilltop Acres T JOLT ET...a powerful package! Jolt retains his hold on the #1 PTI spot, improving for pounds fat and protein, as well as % fat and protein. Siring the strength and substance the dairy industry is looking for, Jolt remains the #1 bull for Strength and rump width. He also improves his udder composite from +1.05 to +1.14. He also remains the #1 Outcross (Expected Future Inbreeding) bull available.

54BS330 Rolling View DENVER ET ...higher across the board!
While Denver improved his components significantly, it was his modest improvement in all areas of an already strong production and type proof that really impresses.

54BS317 Webster Ridge TD... Still #1 Udder Composite bull...and for good reason!
Owners are wowed by the way this great Tom son is maturing...part of the reason for his nice production jump! He is also #2 Outcross.

54BS311 Quincy Even SPECIAL...maintains his position amongst the Top 10 Net Merit bulls,
and further improves his status as a components, longevity and somatic cell specialist. He also improves his udder composite.

54BS332 Triangle Acres PHD...ascended back up the protein ladder,
and currently ranks #4 at +68 and +.07%, making him Gordon's #1 protein son!

54BS339 Blessing Mort Laura LEGACY...early information shows he is following the family legacy which produced Ensign!
Tall and stylish, with outstanding rear udders, this first Collection son is off to an exciting start!

54BS327 Top Acres Even POLSTER and 54BS329 Arthurst Garbro DIABLO...the reasons we like Even blood!
The new additions give breeders a choice of maximum production from Polster, and the high udder quality of Diablo. Both are built to last...just the way we like them!

Sire Summary Highlites (08/03)

54BS332 Triangle Acres PHD: #1 Protein, #1 PTI, #2 Expected Inbreeding...what a combination! From the popular Triangle Col Polly, PHD is her first son, and bursts on the scene as the leading bull for Protein and PTI. Equally impressive is his unique pedigree, which ranks him as the 2nd lowest bull for Expected Inbreeding. This means he can be used easily on a broad range of pedigrees, especially those needing rear udder, teat size and udder support help.

If your herd needs a shot of protein, this PHD can write the prescription!

54BS316 Hilltop Acres T Jolt ET: # 1 Expected Inbreeding, #1 Strength, #7 Protein and PTI...a real JOLT! Yes he is for real! JOLT holds his elite production and type proof, while delivering the powerful cattle Brown Swiss are famous for. All of this from the lowest Expected Inbreeding bull available in the U.S.

54BS311 Quincy Even Special: # 3 Productive Life and improving! Watch the trends, and you see SPECIAL improve run after run in important traits like Productive Life, Somatic Cell, Udder Composite, and Components. Add the fact he is the most consistent milking speed bull we have seen for years, and the one trait he is surely improving on is the one most important to us...CUSTOMER SATISFACTION!

54BS330 Rolling View Denver ET: New and Preliminary data...but we are a MILE HIGH on this young Prelude son! Backed by a strong and emerging cow family, DENVER is delivering consistently sweet udders, dairy frames and will to milk. Watch for much additional information in November.

Revised PTI Formula (07/03)

The U.S. Brown Swiss Association board has approved the Genetic Committee's recommendation for a revised PTI formula as follows:

12 Protein
 5 Fat
 2 Somatic Cell Score
 2 Productive Life (NEW)
 2 Udder Composite (NEW)
 1 PTA Final Score
1 PTA Functional Type Index (FTI)

To get % weight of each component, simply multiply by 4 (example protein is 48%).

The new formula has the following significant changes: NOTE..the changes to PTI will not be official until November 03 !

1. Includes Productive Life for the first time. This becomes even more
interesting, as USDA will use the research behind FTI for this trait for
the first time in August...prior to this, either Jersey or Holstein data
were used for estimates etc.

2. Udder Composite. Will be published, just as PTA Final Score is. Will be the udder part of the FTI formula.

3. SCS goes from 5% to 8% weight

4. PTA Final Score goes back in

Efforts will also be made to deal with the 2 way traits (rump slope, leg set and teat length), to somehow cap extreme bulls.

The new formula should reward bulls which sire longer lasting cows, which work without problems, yet milk at a high level.

Positive Developments! (05/03)

NGG's emphasis on great udders and functional type has resulted in the strongest line-up in the industry! The newest run places 6 NGG bulls in the first 8 active sires for Functional Type Index!  Also noteworthy is all 6 are from different cow families and from 5 different sires.

54BS316  JOLT *TM  (Tom X Blend X Babaray) A nice move up places this powerful out-cross bull near the top for both PTA Type and F.T.I.  He is now #2 Stature, #1 Strength and #1 Thurl Width.

54BS317  TD *TM (Tom X Ensign X Babaray) New on the list, TD has been siring the WOW udders expected by crossing Tammy and Ensign.  He is #3 Fore udder, #2 Teat Placement and #1 Teat Length.

54BS301 SPECIAL (Even X Babaray X Jade)  Special moves up again, and  confirms his consistent pattern of shallow udders, short teats, great rear udders and perfect foot structure.

Premium, Vance, Champ, Seattle and Emerald all made nice improvements in both PTAT and F.T.I.

NGG sets fast pace....(02/03)

Strong new entries by JOLT, TD and MO MONEY highlight a strong evaluation for New Generation Genetics.

Hilltop Acres T JOLT *TM  (Tom(M) X Blend)  met strong expectations by reaching  +1.0 PTA Final Score, and posting a strong FTI of + 6.52.  Large powerful cattle, with outstanding feet and legs, shallow udders and short well placed teats are reflected in his initial summary. JOLT *TM one of the most outcross bulls in the Top 200 maintained his elite production status, while improving significantly in his protein % and Type. Watch for additional information in May on one of this exciting young bull.

Classique MO MONEY (Tradition X Emory) soared over his parent averages.  Powerful dairy cows with high and wide rear udders.

Webster Ridge TD *TM (Tom (M) X Ensign) received his preliminary proof, and it confirms his exceptional udder qualities.

EMERALD and PREMIUM are battling for the top Emory son after all this time!  We look forward to the arrival of our first proven Emerald sons later this year!

More and better...SPECIAL indeed!

Quincy Even SPECIAL *TW  (Even X Babaray) added daughters and improved across the board! Now back to + .6 PTA Final Score, he is the #4 FTI Active bull.  Shallow uddered, short teated dairy cows with strong udder support and the best foot structure in the business.  That defines functional! SPECIAL *TW like his sire Even, is consistent to up in his proofs as his daughters mature. We always like the cows who mature and improve...not just mature!

Loss of a Great Cow... (11/02)
Recently Triangle Acres Col Polly succumbed to complications from surgery to repair a D.A. and stomach adhesions. Polly has long been an NGG favorite, as we admired her tremendous frame, will to work and deep cow family. Her first son 54BS332 PHD will receive his proof next year. We continue to work with this outstanding family and will have exciting new offerings next year including Polly's SEATTLE brother and three offerings from Polly's best daughters! While we are sorry for this great loss, we look forward to working with the Korth family on the new generations of the Polly family!

2002 Expo Junior Champion

We Gotta Legacy P Fantine

We-Gotta Legacy P Fantine pranced her way to first place in the Fall Heifer Class and never looked back. She used her style, deep sweeping rib, wide rump, superb feet and correct legs to claim the Junior Champion banner. Fantine is sired by 54BS339 LEGACY, a Collection son from Reserve All-American Mae We Jo Ca Tradition Laura ‘E-92.’ Also available from NGG is Laura’s STARBUCK son, 54BS373 ENCORE…imagine the udder possibilities with this one! Congratulations to Jerry Harkness, NY, for breeding Fantine and to her owner, David Sattazahn, PA, for developing and exhibiting this champion.

NGG November Highlights:

With no large changes, New Generation bulls were steady to up, with SPECIAL increasing .2 in final score and significantly in FTI. His type pattern resembles his great sire EVEN, who ranks #3 for FTI. Short teats, shallow udders, breed-leading foot structure and outstanding udder quality add up to long lived cows that improve with age...which both EVEN and SPECIAL sire. Ask those milking them!

PRESIDENT remains #1 Active FTI bull, reflecting his outstanding udders, great feat and legs and short teats.

CHAMP, PREMIUM, VANCE AND SEATTLE all improved their individual scores, and remain the type of balanced bulls we are proud of, and breeders are glad to own.

New on the Block from New Generation

Classique MO MONEY  (Tradition x Emory Mosaic).  Debuting at +1413 milk and +46 protein, the Mo Money daughters resemble the massive dairy frame of his dam. It was this massive frame, high protein production and fancy udder that inspired us to sample him...and he not disappointing. Watch in the coming weeks for more information and daughter photos on our website !

eSPECIALLY fast  (6.02)

Shelburne Special Del

What is one of your most hated traits? Slow milking cows? Large herd or small…family labor or hired…everyone hates slow milkers!

We offer several bulls from the fast milking squad…but 54BS311 Special is eSPECIALly fast.

Breeders from East to West concur Special daughters are in a class by themselves. Equally important is Special’s breed leading Somatic Cell Score of 2.82. Add short teats, strong center support and great feet and legs, and you have Special cows made for today’s fast times!

It’s always great to see daughters of a bull continue to develop and that’s just what daughters of 54B311 Special do. Special daughters excel in milking speed, udder cleft, teat length, SCS and foot angle. You will find uniformity and persistency from Special daughters under a variety of management styles. Let’s not forget he is the top Even son and the Number Seven NM$ sire!

Somatic Cell Score is more than an indicator of your monthly bonus.  (6.02)

One measured trait directly impacts every dairy producer’s paycheck, yet receives relatively little attention in genetic selection. That trait is Somatic Cell Score (SCS). We’re pleased it is now a part of the PTI formula (5.6%).

Lowers Milk Price, Lowers Longevity A quick look at your milk check demonstrates the importance of Somatic Cell Score to your final milk price. A low score garners a hefty bonus, particularly from cheese producers. A high score means a penalty and a smaller check.

Something Else But did you know Somatic Cell Score is a good indicator of longevity…or rather of cows that don’t last? A quick look at the worst 20 SCS bulls with a minimum 85% Reliability for Yield shows that only two Swiss bulls are positive for Productive Life! The best of this bad bunch is 3.33 for Somatic Cell Score. Remember, the lower the score…the better.

Higher checks...longer life While a moderate to low SCS does not guarantee a high productive life, an extremely high score nearly guarantees a short life span. Selecting for SCS can result in a higher net milk check and a longer lived herd.

We should also mention that Brown Swiss has the lowest SCS of the 3 major dairy breeds, followed by Holsteins and Jerseys are by far the worst of all dairy breeds.

Switzer Tals Seattle Dani

The more you see, the more impressed you will wonder how he can be a Prophet son. In Austria, 54B284 Seattle ranks in the Top Five Active Sires for Udder Composite, and in the US he remains a leading sire for Productive Life, SCS, and customer satisfaction. Seattle is also the only high ranking Prophet son that is plus on Percent Fat and Protein! What I am getting at...is that you shouldn’t consider Seattle just another Prophet son. He is an extreme Prophet son who is a milk maker, component maker and udder maker.
